An internship to know yourself

Entering the job market today is even more difficult than few years ago. Not only does the economic crisis has effectively depleted the resources of many potential employers, but also the general mood that financial markets have generated has reduced much of the business confidence in being able to recruit, grow internally and appropriately reward young talent.
Nowadays more ‘than ever it is  a survival need for  young talented professionals to rebuild business confidence through the practical demonstration of their ability  and high value  that a young graduate or specialist can still’ bring to a company.
Finding a serious and sufficiently paid internship firstly requires a clear understanding of what you can do from an operational capacity, then it helps a lot of commitment and the ability to learn quickly in several business areas.
The key words are: good will, dependability, practicality and flexibility.
Many serious companies are interested in capable and flexible young  staff, especially if this ‘rough diamond’ has a reasonable cost, can be reshaped according to the variable needs of the company and is thus, an excellent long-term investment.
The main  areas to be searched for  paid internship according to your training, skills and aspirations are currently Finance / Banking, Communication, Social Media, Accounting and IT.
A title at any level in the field in which you are applying for is to confirm the potential employer your genuine interest in that area. Anyway, do not be intimidated by those competitors whose titles and qualifications are maybe more ‘ high-sounding’: in today’s job market, more than ever, sound abilities  win over any qualification as  we already said.
Winning and getting  through  a quality internship means behaving since the very first moment as a young professional, capable, motivated and aware of the work place dynamics. Only if you objectively know your ‘absolute’ value this can ‘become the key to your long term professional success. After a positive internship, where you can learn more about the job while doing it, generally companies will have many good reasons to try to keep you and make you grow within their hierarchies. As far as your professionalism grows the company increasingly benefits from your growing skills. That’s when job opportunities start to multiply… Our Best advice is: Know yourself for future success!

Work and Green Economy

The job places created in the last seven years in the Green Economy were far superior to those fielded by the fossil fuel industry. The research took into account the U.S. situation, but we struggle to believe that the European results are even better, since  many countries such as Germany, Spain and Italy have also made, in proportion, more investment in this sector and data are very encouraging. The sustainable economy grew slowly between 2003 and 2010 but has always progressed, despite the economic crisis, even when other sectors fell, reaching about 2.7 million people employed in the green economy in the United States. Here are some interesting statistics: about 26% of total jobs in the Green Economy are within the manufacturing sector, equating to to just 9% of the entire economy. Regarding the value of goods produced, exports are monetarily worth  in the Green Economy twice a typical traditional export sector.

This sets the ground for a steady progression of the Green Sector even in recessionary times like these.

It makes sense planning your professional future by acquiring all the necessary knowledge and competences to enter the green sector with long term perspectives.

A new model for a flexible use of time

In his latest book, The Future of Work British journalist Richard Donkin says that we must forget inflexible working hours or that type of work that binds us to our desks all day, all thanks to the support of technology as the exemplary journalist Bill Deedes who was seventy years of age and after having terminated his role as a member of the British government decided to go back to writing for the Daily Telegraph. seizing the new technologies to work to the best of his capacity.Richard Donkin is a  journalist expert on employment issues; for many years he has devoted to work and employment a weekly column in the Financial Time being guided by the idea that ” work should be redefined to make it a way of life more pleasant and attractive. ” The real question is, “how will  the work place evolve?”. The web and information technology play the lion’s share.  With its infinite potential and the role of accelerator of communication, knowledge and decision, the web will be crucial. What mainly changes is the quality of jobs that require higher skills and in this, you know, the future belongs to the youngest.
Some typical work related constraints and limits still rigidly in place (work/life balance, formal and informal spaces at work…) are slowly relaxing thanks to the flexibility introduced by the new technologies although the  work related flexibility means less separation working time and private life. Donkin suggests a reduction of hours worked per week, in response to the renounce to retirement for those who wish to offer their experience even if entered in the senior age . Does this mean you can work a lot less and better? Not really, because the invasion of work in your private life generates several consequences: one is addiction and psychological dependency on work  for the so-called ‘workaholics’ while on the opposite extreme there are the ‘fugitives’ who neglect the workload for lack of a conducive environment. As in the good old times of the Before Internet age, the main issue remains  the need to strike a better balance between working hours  and private life .

The Social Networks impact

Talking about social network websites  implicitly means talking about the largest slice of internet users because on sites like Facebook the majority of web surfers can profitably spend their time, especially when  looking for work or to get to know a company. For any company, using the social networks at their best requires a deep understanding  of the social network users. Work and Recruitment

Apparently, over the last period, candidates applying  for a job vacancy tend to exaggerate roles and responsibilities covered in their previous employment. However, Companies are able to cross check over the Internet and often realize the applicant is lying. Searching and checking candidates background on the Internet is becoming almost a standard practice, especially when recruiting medium-high profiles.
These cross checks allow to verify in advance of what  the candidate will say at the time of the interview. According to  recent researches more and more people with marginal roles tend to blindly apply for high profile vacancies and  claim to have held positions of leadership.
These candidates apply for higher positions than those they really held; this mostly happens for job vacancies in the intermediate areas, technical and administrative.
Of course, candidates who fake don’t receive a positive evaluation. However, good recruiters are able to spot poor as well excellent candidates among the competitors’ staff. In many companies there are people with a consolidated experience and seniority, who may be motivated to change company. This is often called ‘headhunting’. This type of recruitment allows the hiring company (or its recruiters) for direct contact with the ideal candidate without going through the full procedure of vacancy advert, CV screening and interview selection.
When headhunted the  interview takes place directly between the candidate and the recruiter  but it is likely that in the next two years recruiters will increasingly rely on profiles and information available on the web before meeting their high profile candidates.
The reason for web recruiting success is simple: it allows to reduce timing and costs for candidates selection.

Tips for work

If you are looking for work and only rely on  your curriculum vitae, move on! In the internet era, the dear, old CV is no longer enough to find a job and you have to be  original to get noticed by employers. The advice, aimed at fresh graduates, long term unemployed or those struggling with their current job, comes from the British newspaper The Guardian, which has conducted a survey among industry experts to discover the most original and useful ideas candidates can put into practice to find work. The result? Firstly you need to “be able to combine professional talent and shamelessness”, making your CV more attractive and suitable to the type of job for which you are applying. Choose a conservative curriculum  layout if you apply for a job in a bank, or opt for a more creative CV if you aim at getting hired in an advertising agency. However, you should put on your CV  only the truth, as an influential president of a european HR managers association says: Bluffers do not last long: it takes is a little mastery to discover if your skills match what companies are looking for. For example, you should know that employers increasingly appreciate young candidates. Final marks set aside, the important thing is to get your degree as soon as possible . And then, of course, the future is the Internet: it is vital to publish your CV on specialized sites.
Beside the curriculum you should complement other gimmicks to attract attention and “sell yourself at the best”.

Firstly keep in touch with old university friends, who may have made it in their careers: they can help you find a job; alternatively write a blog by knowing your potential, go to the gym to learn how to show a greater selfconfidence, or rely on word of mouth.
In general, however, the Internet can be a source of endless opportunities. Having a blog or a site is considered to be a great way to get to know and to show your talent in a particular field.
We warn you: do not advertise on the Internet how much you hate your ex. Also because she could be hired thanks to your advertisement. Forbidden complaining about your previous employers: 20% of personnel managers looks for information on social networks to screen candidates, focusing on their comments on racial discrimination or abuse against previous employers.

Gossip

What to do if you are trapped by gossip, if you receive indirect charges or if you simply want to stand out in a workgroup?
Gossip and rumors in the workplace are unavoidable, especially within large work groups, and need to be addressed with clinical detachment. You almost need to cover yourself with a thick layer of whale grease; after all, what really matters on the job is your professional value and the result achieved in the workplace.
Impulsive reactions are not recommended since these have often proven to be more harmful for the gossip victim than for those who whisper about you. Everything should be always addressed with calm, and once you have taken your time to rationalize the situation. Using the ‘funnel’ technique can be very effective – this involves asking questions aimed to find out what’s not appreciated in the way you work; you may also unexpectedly improve your work performance in response to criticism received.
If you want to stand out in a team you must be meticulously prepared by intervening at the end of a debate and involving the rest of your colleagues while referring to what they have been saying during the debate. You will truly impress your bosses and colleagues if you support your proposals with a passionate shine in your eyes.

Technology at work

Nokia, a great leader in the field of telecoms and technology, has to deal with the Apple trademark, which has threatened its rivals far further afield than the stock market, and certainly in terms of profits.

Nokia shares have plummeted because of the increased  competition in Europe and China which has risen at a fast pace in recent times  while crushing margins and revenues of the Nokia group, not only at high levels but even at the low end of the market.

Although there are issues for Nokia and mobile service providers in general, at least the Internet is constantly helping to increase the value of its market: it currently has a yearly revenue estimated at $1.7 billion. More than 2 billion people are exchanging data over the network, but what is really astonishing is that the digital economy is still in its infancy!

This is just one more reason to prefer scientific, technology or business studies over humanities; in fact, the web will be looking for you as soon as you’ve finished your studies as computer programmer, web marketing specialist or graphic designer! Good luck!

Change your mindset to change your job!

If you believe that happiness is a far off abstract concept, try telling this to those people who never lose their smile. It seems a worthwhile idea to talk about happiness with employers too. In fact, according to The Happiness Advantage by Shawn Achor, happy employees are 30% more productive than dissatisfied workers.

The joy of getting up every morning and going to a job that you love helps you and your company, although getting to that point is easier said than done!

Learn to have a positive view on things: for example, avoid taking other people as perfect examples; it’s vital to find your own reasons to reach for high standards. In other words, we need to ask ourselves what to expect from a job.

Happiness can’t rain from the sky, even if we are not the first to look for it, but let’s stop feeling sorry for ourselves! Be realistic: the perfect job does not exist, but to understand what you really want is essential in finding the best match. Awareness can help you: firstly you should look for a bright, lively component in our daily work, secondly you should find stimulating challenges appropriate to your skills, and finally you should try to share those goals and strategies with your company.

It is certainly very useful to find out if you are more likely to liaise with the public, or if you prefer to set goals behind the scenes. In any case, it is essential to establish micro targets, ensuring small but continuous joys besides the feeling of having more control over your life.

What is important is understanding what affects your motivation: if you’re happy, you’re sad, you don’t know what you really want or you’ve simply changed your values…Make clear what you want!
